Focus: Beginning or
current firearms instructors, primarily those who deal with beginning
shooters and who are tasked with remediating problem-shooters.
Length: 40 hours
This course is an in-depth exploration of teaching officers “how to
shoot” their duty handgun and shotgun. While most “firearms
instructors’ courses” are simply a fun week of shooting where the new
instructor receives an instructor’s certificate, this course spends
much more time providing “instructional theory and implementation”
experience to participants. The emphasis of this course is training
the instructor-candidate in how to train novice shooters (recruits)
and how to remediate problem-shooters to competency.
Proper gun-handling and tactical conditioning for police combat
is emphasized throughout the course. The way officers are trained
from the beginning of their firearms experience will play a huge part
in how they will employ their firearms in their future careers. This
course provides the basis and beyond of a sound foundation in training
officers to survive a deadly encounter with their handgun and
shotgun.
Testing includes:
-
Written examination
(Thursday) on legal issues surrounding the use of deadly force by
officers.
-
Instructional
examination on one-on-one instructional capabilities, as well as
ground training (Friday).
-
Lesson plan development
and documentation.
